Water Heater

When to Repair vs. Replace Your Water Heater?

Water heaters are an important part of our homes, they provide hot water for bathing, washing dishes, laundry and more. However, Just like any other appliance, these too don’t last forever and with time they can develop problems that may leave you in a dilemma whether to repair or replace them. Let’s understand some signs that indicate whether you should repair or replace your water heater.

When to Repair Your Water Heater

Many times, your water heater may just need a simple fix from a professional to start functioning properly again. Here are some signs that suggest a repair is needed:

1. Inconsistent Water Temperature – If your water heater doesn’t deliver hot water consistently, there might be some issue with the thermostat or heating element. These issues can be fixed by getting some repairs from a professional, who can change these old components with new ones and restore your heater’s performance.

2. Strange Noises – If you hear strange banging noises from your water heater, then this may be due to sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank. This buildup can make your heater work harder to heat water, thus it’s best to get this problem fixed at the earliest.

3. Leaking Pressure Relief Valve – If water starts leaking from the pressure relief valve, then it’s most likely a valve problem and not a tank problem. For such issues, professionals can help you replace the valve and prevent future leaks.

4. Age of the Heater – If your water heater is less than 10 years old, it’s better to get it repaired rather than replace it with a new one. As most water heaters typically last 10 to 15 years easily, if your heater is not that old you should just get a few repairs done.

When to Replace Your Water Heater

Sometimes, replacing your water heater with a new one is a better option. Here are signs that indicate it might be time for a new water heater:

1. Old Age –  Water heaters usually last for about 10 to 15 years. If your unit is older than 10 years and is repeatedly experiencing issues despite repairs then replacing would be a wiser option. With time an older water heater becomes less efficient and is prone to costly repairs.

2. Rusty Water – If you find rust in your hot water and it is coming from the tank then this can indicate a serious problem. Rust inside the tank clearly shows that your water heater is deteriorating and could result in leaks or the unit bursting at any time. This issue can’t be fixed by making a few repairs and you should immediately replace your heater.

3. Frequent Breakdowns – If your heater has had multiple repairs within a short span of time then it may be more cost-effective to install a new water heater. Constant repairs can be quite costly, thus investing in a new heater is a smarter long-term decision.

4. Water Heater Leaks – A leaking tank is a clear indicator that you need to replace your water heater. Although small leaks in valves or pipes can be repaired, a leak in the tank itself typically means that the heater is at the end of its life.
