DIY Plumbing Inspection: What to Look for in Your Home

Regular maintenance of your home’s plumbing system is essential to promptly deal with any potential issues before they lead to costly repairs in the future. A DIY plumbing inspection can help make sure that everything is functioning properly and smoothly. In this guide, we will explore what you should check while doing your home’s plumbing inspection.

Check for Leaks

Leaks are one of the most common plumbing issues, so begin your inspection by looking out for signs of any leaks in pipes, faucets and other fixtures. You can start by turning on a faucet and inspecting around its base and under the sink to look for signs of water leakage.

You can check the base of the toilet to see if there is any moisture. Take a look at the pipes connected to the showerhead for drips and leaks. If you notice a small leak with water dripping slowly you must get it fixed at the earliest before it turns into a bigger problem.

Inspect the Water Heater

Just like any other electrical appliance water heaters also need regular maintenance, while they usually last for about 10-15 years you can prolong their lifespan by getting them serviced regularly. Look out for any signs of rust on the tank and connections as this could indicate an imminent leak.

Plus check the pressure relief valve periodically to ensure that it is functioning properly. Lift the valve and let it snap back, by doing so water should come out from the overflow pipe. If water doesn’t come out then it might be time to replace the valve.

Check for Clogs and Slow Drains

Does water drain slowly in your bathroom causing it to collect on one side while you are bathing? Although this may seem like a small problem initially, it can lead to various plumbing problems if not handled promptly.

To check how quickly water drains in your bathroom, start by running water in the sink, shower area and tub. If it drains slowly then a clog might be developing in the drainage, you can get a drain snake or call a skilled plumber to fix the issue.

Inspect Pipes and Connections

As time passes, pipes start to develop issues and become structurally weak. Check all the pipes in the bathroom like those under the sink, connected to the bidet, toilet, showerhead, etc. If you notice any rust or corrosion then it might be time to get the pipes replaced with new ones. Also, check if the water pressure is low in any part of the house as it can indicate that there is some problem in the pipes.

Look for Signs of Water Damage

Look out for any discoloration, peeling, or bubbling in the walls and ceilings. These could indicate a hidden leak. Also, check for any signs of seepage and moisture on the walls as this could mean that water is leaking from somewhere. If you notice any such thing, call a professional plumber at the earliest as this could cause serious structural damage to your property and could also cause electrical issues.
