PFAS Health Effects

The Latest Research on PFAS Health Effects

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of chemicals that are present in many of our daily use items. These “forever chemicals” have the potential to last in both the environment and the human body for a long time and have raised concerns worldwide.

What are PFAS?

The first PFAs were developed in the 1930s and were used for nonstick and waterproof coatings, but their industrial usage began much later in the 1940s. Today they are used in a variety of industries and products such as food packaging, non-stick cookware, water-resistant clothing, cosmetics, medical devices and many other industries.

These man-made chemicals get their nickname ‘forever chemicals’ due to the fact that they don’t break down easily and last for hundreds or thousands of years in the environment.

PFAS Presence In The Water

Past their presence in our cooking utensils, clothes and cosmetics, PFAS are also found in our water now! In a study of more than 45,000 water samples around the world, it was found that about 31 percent of groundwater samples tested positive for PFAS contamination levels harmful to humans. These samples were collected from areas that weren’t near any obvious source of contamination.

This number is concerning because PFAS have been linked to numerous health issues in humans.

Health Risks Associated With PFAS Exposure

Research has shown that exposure to PFAS leads to a range of health issues. The presence of high levels of PFAS in the bloodstream has been associated with adverse health risks such as:

  • Risks of some types of cancers
  • Liver and immune function damage
  • Developmental delays in children
  • Increased cholesterol levels
  • Cardiovascular risks

According to Exposure and Health, the cost of PFAS-attributable diseases in the USA is at least US$5.5 billion annually and could be as much as $62 billion annually.

Studies have also found that younger people are particularly affected by PFAS. The negative effects are more prominent in younger people as compared to older people.

PFAS In Drinking Water

Concerns about PFAS contaminating drinking water have increased particularly in areas like Ann Arbor. Its presence in areas where PFAS-containing products are used and manufactured has heightened worries about water saferty.

A recent study highlighted that most of the exposure of PFAS is observed near urban areas and potential PFAS sources. USGS scientists estimate that the probability of PFAS not being present in tap water is about 75% in rural areas and only about 25% in urban areas.

Making it a must to have strict regulations and effective water treatment solutions to ensure safer drinking water for all.

Michael was very knowledgeable and patient. He answered all of my questions and helped me understand all of the products available to me and how I can get them in the best way for me. Thankful to my friend who referred me to them!

I have mixed reviews on CGC, but the most recent service call by Dan R was exceptional! My iron filtration system had a leak and he came in and knew exactly what it was and how to fix it, which he did very quickly. He then went on to inspect the rest of my water purification systemS, explaining to me exactly what he was looking at/for, and the health/status of each compone So in addition to repairing the leak, he efficiently knocked out a complete inspection, eliminating my need for the annual service call I would normally have had to arrange next month. He not only saved me the additional trip charge, but he made no attempt to upsell me on things I didn't need. He showed respect for my home (booties, for one), he was incredibly knowledgeable and professional, he gave me A LOT of good information, and from beginning to end he was just a pleasure to deal with. And at the end he only charged me for the straight service call, with his extra inspection included and the leak repair covered by warrantee. Highly recommend!
